Laboratory of Vision & Optics

With a focus on the sciences of Vision, the Laboratory of Vision and Optics (LVO) of the University of Crete is active in the fields of research, education, technology and the provision of specialized medical services. The Laboratory of Vision and Optics for its collaborations with abroad uses the abbreviation LVO (Laboratory of Vision and Optics).

 

The Laboratory of Vision and Optics consists of individual laboratories that share common infrastructure, administrative services and scientific staff. However, they differ in the axis of their activities.

 

The laboratories cooperate  to providing high quality research as well as specialized training of scientists in subjects related to their field activity. At the same time they promote the University's extroversion towards society.

 

LVO is housed in the Medical School of the University of Crete, employs ophthalmologists, doctors, opticians and optometrists, medical photographers, nurses and scientists in the fields of physics, mathematics, biology, chemistry, biomedical engineering, technology and computer technology. The close cooperation of the above specialties under the close guidance of the Director of the Laboratory, Professor M. Tsilimbaris, has as a consequence the LVO to continue today the tradition inherited from the international activity and the numerous distinctions of its founder em. Professor I. Pallikaris and to be at the forefront in the field of vision research. Its physicians and researchers are members of International Organizations with numerous publications to their credit.

 

LVO operates in a non-for-profit basis and its revenues come from the services it offers and from research funds / programs. Proceeds from the services offered are used to finance the research carried out in the Laboratory. The autonomy that is ensured, is the mechanism for pushing its activities, since it provides the ability of self-financed research and continuous upgrade of its clinical and research equipment but also the material-technical infrastructure necessary for its educational activities.

 

The Laboratory of Vision and Optics is classified in the Laboratories that have the special advantage of being able to design, construct and apply at a preclinical and clinical level its research results (Translational Research). This fact makes it the most tangible and perhaps the only Greek laboratory of ophthalmic translation research. At the same time it provides specialized and high quality health and education services, with active collaborations in our country and abroad.
