Organizational and functional activities of the Lab are organized through the following units:

1. V.E.I.C (Vardinoyiannion Eye Institute of Crete)

VEIC represents historically the core of the Laboratoy. It is the place where LASIK was developed by Prof. I Pallikaris  and from that time it became the most often applied refractive operation globally.  VEIC operates as a high-end refractive center offering specialized services to our patients. The clinical research that takes place here has received many distinctions all over the world.

At the same time VEIC has active social precence since its medical and paramedical staff offers volunteer ophthalmic and diagnostic services to isolated populations, that live in remote and inaccessible areas.


2. Laboratory of Biomechanics in Vision

Active in the field of developing new instruments and methods for diagnosing and treating diseases of the eye and for measuring physiological parameters. It also promotes activities related to optical bio-engineering and mathematical simulation of the function of our optical system.

 

3. Laboratory of Optics and Imaging

Active in the field of developing new and innovative instruments and methods for imaging the structures of the eye and the development of physical and mathematical models to better analyze the results and improve accuracy and efficiency of existing imaging and diagnostic methods.

 

4. Laboratory of Electrophysiology and Psychophysics


It's one of the best organized ophthalmic electrophysiology laboratories in the country. It offers high-fidelity electrodiagnostic services, while at the same time conducting high-quality research in the field of electrophysiology and visual psychophysics.

 

5. Laboratory of Basic Biological Research

Active in developing new animal models of eye diseases and diseases' evaluation at the cellular and molecular level. Furthermore, specialized in the assession of the safety and efficacy of new drug therapies and devices' application at animal models. It, also, promotes the creation of genetic databases for hereditary diseases of the eye.
